Color Run 2012

Today we participated in the Las Vegas Color Run! It’s a 5k where they throw colored powder at you every kilometer. It’s not a race, per se, since there’s no timing runners, so I did not feel the pressure to do something I’m not able to. I hadn’t run in weeks, so if there was a competitive component, I would have beat myself up. Lucky for me, friend Margaret hadn’t been feeling well, so we ran through the color zones and power walked the bits in between.

It was such a blast! A fun way to exercise and raise money for Three Square, a local food pantry that serves a huge percentage of the city. I can’t say much more, since pictures are the only way to do it justice:

Love this girl. So glad we got to leave near each other again after college!

After the “race”, there’s a moment in time where everyone gets to throw their own packet of “color”. It was insane!

They explain how to get more or less color. Clearly, I took their advice and made the most of the color experience and Keith stayed as clean as possible. I got green powder thrown in my face (and mouth) at point blank range and couldn’t see through my glasses at all. A photographer was right in front of me and said, “Well, there’s the shot of the day!” Anything I can do to help you out, man.

How the color works!

These crazies are awesome friends. Thanks for all the laughs!

Quadruple Bypass Burger at the Heart Attack Cafe. Gross.

They weren’t letting “paint people” in. How rude!

Vegas at it’s best – there are so many awesome, family friendly things to be part of in this city!

As an aside, one guy saw my face and called me She Hulk. Here’s my self-portrait inspired by the new nickname!

It’s Saturday, but this is totally something I’m thankful for and a favorite memory so far this year!

Adventures in St Louis!

I had the awesome opportunity of exploring St Louis this weekend while celebrating my sister’s appearance in the NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament!

Even dogs were participating in Occupy St Louis!

We celebrated Springfield's participation in the NCAA tournament at 360 - an awesome spot with incredible views of the city.

Home of the Cardinals! Have I ever mentioned how much I love baseball?!

Springfield Pride Volleyball at the banquet!

Elite 89 winner!! Highest GPA of all the competitor's goes to one of Molly's teammates!

Four Mustketeers :)

Gateway Arch

Interesting perspective - it's definitely a piece of art that changes depending on where you stand.

I learned that the arch is made of stainless steel - I always thought it was some type of white material!

My favorite view of the arch - this'll be in the shop soon!!

View from the top! I wasn't as scared of the height as I thought, but it swayed a lot so I was dizzy for a few hours after coming back to land!

At the tournament, we were impressed by Christopher Newport University's pep band!!

Pep talks before the game :)

And then home again...

California Trip Post 3: Napa Valley

After Yosemite, we headed over to Fairfield, CA where we stayed at Travis Air Force Base for two nights. The first night we headed up to the small town of Rutherford and had a lovely dinner in wine country!

Dinner in wine country - yum!

I love grape vines...especially when they stretch for miles!

The Wine Train tracks...maybe next time!

Racks of wine - I'm not a big red wine fan, but it was just so pretty!

Grape leaves at sunset...

Friends from the area recommended Rutherford Grille for dinner – a total hit! I had a wonderful glass of Riesling from Waugh Cellars. I wish they sold this particular wine to the public – I’d buy 10 bottles!! It was light, sweet, and fruity; so yummy! I had yummy rotisserie chicken and mashed potatoes and Keith had a roast beef sandwich with au jus.  And then there was the Oreo cookie dessert:

Keith tried to lick the plate clean, but the waitress took it away :)

It was only a few hours in Napa, but we had a great time!!

California Trip Part 2: Yosemite National Park

After our quick detour through Sequoia National Park, we headed on to one of my favorite places in the world: Yosemite National Park.

One of the highlights of any trip to Yosemite is the Tunnel View, but since we got in so late it was too dark. We stopped anyways and a kind photographer taught me all about night photography! If only I had bought the $5 tripod at Goodwill before we left, I would have had some amazing shots!

On Day 1, we headed into Yosemite Village and attempted to get reservations for the Awahnee Dining Room for that evening.

The Awhanee Hotel was built in the 1920s and is a gorgeous tribute to the valley and the Native American ancestry.

Queen Elizabeth II and President Kennedy both stayed at the Awahnee!

We took a walk through a meadow. I love meadows.

When we turned around, Half Dome was displayed gloriously!

We took a short walk to Yosemite Falls, which have now been renamed, "Keith's Falls"

After a long day of exploring we took naps and read before getting gussied up for our fancy dinner – we were certainly out of place on the shuttle bus, being the only people without hiking clothes on!

When we got to the Awahnee, the Maitre D’ looked at us with sad eyes and told us that all the reservations were taken and even if he gave us a pager (as we were advised that morning) we probably would not be able to be seated since they had to leave a certain number of tables open for hotel guests. I must have had a look for horror on my face because the woman next to us turned and offered us her reservation since she was staying at the hotel and could come back another night.

Tears welled up in my eyes! I was so grateful and astonished at the woman’s generosity. We had a lovely meal and made quite a memory.

It was a gorgeous night for a special dinner!

One of the most beautiful dining rooms on earth! I had the BEST glass of wine in my life - it was even named the Awahnee!

As we walked back to camp, the sun was setting over Hlaf Dome. Absolute beauty.

Tuesday was our big hike day! We went into a side canyon where we climbed up to Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls.

A beautiful rainbow wat the bottom of Vernal Falls.

We made it all the way to the top!

A beautiful view of Nevada Falls.

We also saw several bucks, a doe, a fawn, and plenty of ugly crows! Haha…

The last day, we took a drive to Bridalveil Falls, Tunnel View, and Glacier Point. There was a controlled lightning fire on one of the mountains, so our views were not clear, but we got some very interesting pictures, regardless!

The famous Tunnel View shrouded in smoke.

So mysterious and beautiful.

Half Dome from Glacier Point.

One of the highlights of Yosemite for me is Camp Curry. We stayed in the tent cabins and they were the perfect compromise between camping and not having to tote all our gear with us!

I love this place! It feels like summer camp for grown ups :)

Inside of the tent cabin - a full bed, a twin bed, a chair, and a small bookshelf for organization!

Our little home away from home!

I was surprised I didn’t cry on the way out of the valley – Disney got it wrong, Yosemite is the Happiest Place on Earth!

Goodbye, Yosemite! Until next time...

I am selling many of these prints on the Etsy shop – only two and a half weeks left to get a 50% discount! Don’t forget to enter the giveaway before 10pm PST Friday!!

California Trip Part 1: Sequoia National Park

We started out early Sunday morning, planning to drive to Yosemite in our first day with a “quick” stop in Sequoia. We didn’t realize this quick stop would add four hours of driving to our agenda!

It was so worth it :)

We wound up through the mountains and stopped at the Giant Forest to see “The Sentinal” and “General Sherman”. Here are some of our favorite pictures!

This is "The Sentinel" tree - it hangs out in front of the visitor's center.

Visitor's Center

These trees are so big!!

"General Sherman" is the biggest tree in the world!!

On our hike back to the car, we saw a bear!!

And that was only the beginning of our journey! More pictures and wildlife to come :)

Many of you have read about the giveaway, but you haven’t entered yet! And don’t forget to use your 50% coupon (BIRTHDAY50) before it expires in September!
