Christmas Friday Favorites 12/25

Wow, this Christmas has been truly wonderful! We were blessed to be with family and celebrate together. Here are some of my favorite moments from the weekend:

.peppermint hot chocolate.

Keith has headed back to Vegas and my parents, sister, and I are all hanging out by a roaring fire missing him. At least we’ve got some hot chocolate complete with fresh whipped cream and a candy cane :)

.phone cover.

My mom surprised me with a new phone case in keeping with the theme of this year. I love it!

.walks outside.

While celebrating together, we like to take longs walks to exercise, talk, and let the kiddos run off some energy! It was so refreshing to be out in the brisk December air!!!

.gingerbread houses.

Christmas Eve means Gingerbread Houses! Aunt Peg, Erwin, & Greg all worked very hard to build theirs!

Molly had front doors and a roof that opened and closed!

.nieces and nephews.

This good looking bunch of towheads are amazing. We’ve been been blessed with 6 gorgeous nieces and nephews; I hate that we only get to see them every six months!

.italian christmas eve.

Christmas Eve is an epic event in my parents’ house. They have loads of friends and family over and we eat yummy food.

All my favorites: sharp provelone, spicey sopressata, pepperoni, and stuffed cherry peppers!

Yes, there was an entire octopus in the scungili salad. Eck. This is why I don’t eat octopus.

My new favorite addition to Christmas Eve: candied cranberries!

.mil.

My mother in law is amazing. I just had to let you all know that this beautiful woman is a blessing to me!

.modern family.

Another awesome moment today was receiving the 2nd season of Modern Family! I can’t wait to watch it because my favorite episode of all time was the Season 2 Halloween episode! Woot!

.fondue.

Wednesday night we had Keith’s sister and her family over to the in-law’s house for fondue! It was fun teaching my niece and nephew all the etiquette of this family tradition! They especially loved kissing the person to their left if they dropped their food in the pot :)

.merry christmas.

From our family to yours, Merry Christmas!

Songs of the Day: O Holy Night & Sleigh Ride

This year, one of my students asked what my favorite Christmas songs were. When I really thought about it, I could only narrow it down to two:

1. O Holy Night: The lyrics of this song always challenge me to remember the significance of Christmas. December 25th isn’t just about a baby being born, but about God relinquishing the comfort of Heaven to spend a lifetime on Earth to be killed in order to save us from a lifetime apart from God. The word ‘holy’ means ‘set apart for a special purpose’, so Jesus’ birth is definitely a special night!

2. Sleigh Ride: This song has so many special memories for me. Every year, the Coast Guard Band would have their Christmas Concert and invite my dance teacher to choreograph something for a selection of their music. My favorite moment of every concert was when they would play Sleigh Ride; I would sneak into the wings, close my eyes, and know that Christmas was here!

Enjoy this 1979 version of the United States Coast Guard Band playing Leroy Anderson’s classic piece:

Favorite Things About Christmas/Home Tour

It’s that time of year when all sorts of people in bloggy land start Favorite Things and Home Tour parties! I figured I’d mash it all up and make it one ginormous post – are you ready?!

.rockettes.

After growing up going to NYC on a regular basis and then living there for 6 years, I can only associate one type of performance with Christmas: the Radio City Rockettes! Did I mention they are on the Netflix Instant Queue now?!

Nothing like a good kick line to get you in the mood :)

.hot drinks.

Even though we’re living in the desert now, I still like to cuddle up with a hot drink and pretend it’s snowing outside, watch a Christmas movie, or just enjoy the quiet! Nutella Hot Chocolate is my drink of choice right now :)

Yup, something so amazing is so simple!

.tree.

Growing up, both of us always had a real tree! I miss having one, but it’s just been a better choice for us to have our fake one for right now. We got it the day after Christmas a few years ago for over 50% off and we don’t have to worry about it making a mess or running out of water while we’re both working and then leaving town for awhile. Keith is very impressed by the remote control lights.

It's covered with ornaments from significant moments in our lives - we've already run out of room for all of them!

.decorating.

When it comes to decorating for Christmas, I am always on a mission. If it doesn’t get done (start to finish) in 48 hours, it never will. Usually, I dedicate about four solid hours and do it all at once. I really like how the buffet in the dining room turned out this year!

The garland plus lights make it so cozy :)

.christmas cards.

This is only the second year we’ve sent out Christmas cards – every year before that was a massive email to everyone about our year. Now that we’re stationed far away from family, we enjoy filling everyone in on our adventures…I’ll post our card and letter on Christmas day!

Last year's card.

This year I’m hanging the cards around the door frame from the living room to our bedroom – I love the way it turned out!

I hate it when my phone gives me a crummy picture! Clara's battery only has a 40 minute lifespan these days, so I'm stuck with the phone until a new battery arrives!!

.cookies.

Who doesn’t love Christmas cookies?! I’m trying not to love them so much since I’m trying to figure out the status of my metabolism after changing several medications. It’s a losing battle. I love the chocolate dipped shortbread cookies and peanut butter blossoms, but my all time favorite are date balls!

Yes please!

.food.

Some of you may remember the Christmas Eve post from last year. Well, the count down is exactly 7 days!! I am so excited for some stuffed peppers, meats, cheeses, and bacala! Just in case you’re a seasoned Italian Christmas Eve fan, I do not eat octopus, raw squid, eel, or smelts. I just don’t and you can’t convince me otherwise.

Olives, sharp cheeses, and sopresatta make me a happy girl!

.gifting others.

I am really starting to think my love language has shifted to gifts. I’ll always be a physical touch person, but I can’t help buying people lots and lots of gifts to shower them with love. I also love wrapping it in fun ways and making everything coordinate :)

This year I've got "Ho, Ho, Ho" and candy cane coordinating paper

.music.

I have loved doing the Songs of Christmas series this year! I know I’m about four days behind, but it has made me so thankful for all the wonderful artists out there! Not many people have linked up, but I am enjoying it just the same – maybe I’ll start my own bloggy-land Christmas party next year!

.movies.

I am obsessed with Christmas movies :) I refuse to watch them during the year, but they are playing constantly after Thanksgiving! My new favorite this year is Christmas in Connecticut, but I also love Elf, It’s a Wonderful Life, and The Holiday. It’s so hard to choose…but right now I’m in the mood for the Kranks!

Funniest. Movie. Ever.

.concerts.

As a kid, I went to the U.S. Coast Guard Band’s annual Christmas concert. Sadly, I haven’t been in quite a few years, but having our school Performing Arts Concert this week made up for it in a small way. I do miss the Boston Pops’ arrangement of Sleigh Ride though!!!!

Songs of Christmas: Give This Christmas Away

I am so glad this is today’s song. My mom described it best in her email:

…it has served as a great reminder to be quick to give: gifts, time, energy, joy – no reason to hold back!  We already have it all.

This album (Matthew West’s The Heart of Christmas) is sitting in my car’s CD player, I’ve choreographed a piece to one of the songs, and I love the wonderful collection of new and traditional Christmas songs in a variety of genres!

Here’s to not holding anything back!

Dance Team Family Christmas Dinner

This was one of those moments that all the hours of preparation made me doubt the sanity of the suggestion of feeding 18 hungry teens the week of several major performances and several days before Christmas break.

But seeing the kids giggling and enjoying each others company was all worth it it! The dinner was in honor of our Italian exchange student who inspired the meal of her favorite foods from home. I only have pictures of the food (and one of everyone) since I decided to enjoy the afternoon instead of being stuck behind the camera (and because my stupid battery has decided it will not hold more than 40 minutes of charge at a time).

Nothing starts a long day in the kitchen like eggs and Taylor Ham :)

double chocolate brownie cookies - click me for the link!

Made lots of chocolate buttons for cookie bag donations...It's a good thing I'm gluten free because I wasn't even tempted to eat them!

Buttons are super easy: a chocolate kiss goes on a pretzel and in the oven at 200 degrees F for 5 minutes. then smush a m&m in the middle and stick in the freezer til they’re solid!

I decided to brown some meatball mixture up instead of using just ground beef or sausage - it added so much flavor - yum!

Simmering pot of sauce :)

One lasagna...

Two lasagna...

The tablescape.

Each stool had a candy cane :)

Love these kids!

This was going to be a fancy Miscellany Monday post, all with my own rendition of “The TwelveThingsINeedToGetDone Before Christmas”, but let’s face it. My brain is way to fried to add any creative projects to the list!

Songs of Christmas: Feliz Navidad

Oh man, it has been a week! I am beyond exhausted. If I thought Monday through Thursday was insane, I had no idea what was coming today. Let’s just say the day started with one student punching another in the face at the end of class and didn’t get much better.

Thank goodness for dance team kiddos with lots of hugs – nothing is better than a super tall 18 year old boy knowing you need a hug and squeezing the stress out!! They seemed to pass the message around, because all the boys had hugs at different times in the afternoon!

That makes this the perfect day for this song! Can’t wait to hear our mariachi band play this at our concert on Thursday:

Songs of Christmas: Mele Kalikimaka

I just found this post hanging around the draft box. Weird!! This one’s from December 6th.

This song could not have come at a better time! We left home this morning to 24 degree weather (that’s like hell frozen over to desert dwellers) and my parents woke up to nasty rainy weather. I was always jealous of my childhood dance teacher and her family who celebrated Christmas at the beach in Hawaii.

Enjoy!

Songs of Christmas: Carol of the Bells

Love this song and who doesn’t love Christmas carols by the Mormon Tabernacle choir?!

Teaching our here has been interesting around Christmas time. Our school has a “holiday” tree (it’s clearly a Christmas tree) and our principal loves it when we play Christmas music in our rooms. Next week is the performing arts department’s annual concert.

I’m working hard to take advantage of the opportunity to introduce my students to Christian music artists – we’ve been using Matthew West and Point of Grace, so who knows if the kids will start listening to more of their work.

Just today, four students decided to do a contemporary piece to Point of Grace version of Carol of the Bells/What Child Is This:

I can’t find a video of this song anywhere, if you can find one, please let me know!!

Really thankful for the opportunity to be in my students’ lives!
